Power of Gratitude
Showing gratitude is one of the simplest, yet most powerful things humans can do for each other. Just by saying thank you to an individual or to just show appreciation can automatically transform a situation. According to research, there is a good reason to believe that those who are often grateful or showing gratitude tend to be happier and healthier than the people who don’t. Thus, the power of gratitude is one to be harnessed.
Grateful people show more appreciation of what they have instead now rather than what they lack. They show gratitude to others and more often receive gratitude in return as a result. To this people, a new day is a day of abundance, happiness, and a gift, rather than another challenge to struggle through. Gratitude has the power to change lives, it can give you hope for the future. According to a (Dr. Emmons) research, gratitude strengthens relationships, improve health, reduces stress and makes us happier in general.
Gratitude gives us a clear perspective of our situation
When we are able to recognize the good as well as the bad, it becomes more difficult for us to complain and nag about our current situation.
Gratitude creates an awareness of what we have
When being aware of the things we have right now, we automatically reduce our tendency to want more. More money, more food, better clothing, better house, the better job and better relationships.
The Attitude of Gratitude
I recently came across an article by (Angeles Arrien). In this article, she explained that the feeling of gratitude naturally occurs from within. This means that it’s not simply an emotional response that most of us think it is. Instead, it is a choice that we make. We can choose to say thank you every now and then, not just when are given a gift. I have realized that what happens most of the time is that we think that the only time we are to be grateful or express our appreciation is when something has been given to us.
Besides that, we never show any feeling of thankfulness. Which is wrong in my opinion. Gratitude should be expressed more frequently than that. For example, when we wake up in the morning, go to bed at night, see the smile our children’s face, the water we drink, the people in our lives, and many more. Since gratitude is a choice, it is also simply an attitude.
